The Asheville Fire Department along with the Asheville Firefighters Association (Local 332) is excited to team up and host the Asheville Firefighters for Literacy program. Firefighters spent this school year reading to students at Estes Elementary hoping to get them excited about doing the same.Asheville Firefighters for Literacy encourages students to be more interested in reading and to set and reach literacy goals. Teachers helped to tally the number of books read by each student and the 5 students who read the most get to ride to school like a true Literacy Superhero by riding in an Asheville fire truck scheduled this Friday, June 2. “Kids love firefighters and firefighters love kids,” says Captain John Ellis. “This will be so fun for everyone involved, the kids will see how great it is to read and hopefully continue to do so for the rest of their lives.”Asheville Firefighters for Literacy helps to create strong partnerships between Asheville firefighters and local schools and sets strong examples by encouraging kids to read, setting them up for success. Media is invited to attend this Friday. The fire truck is planned to leave AFD’s station 5 between 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. and arrive soon just before 8:00 a.m. at Estes Elementary.For more information please contact Jeremiah DeBrie at 857-523-0936
