Charles George, Mountain Home VAMCs join forces to combat hunger

Press release from WNC VA Health Care System:

The Western North Carolina VA Health Care System will be weighing its share of collected food items for the annual Feds Feed Families Food DriveAug. 1, at 1:30 p.m. at Charles George VAMC’s receiving entrance and loading dock behind Bldg. 47.

The food was gathered by different organizations within the Health Care System as part of the Feds Feed Families Food Drive. Feds Feed families is an annual campaign that spans all federal agencies nationwide. It’s voluntary, entirely employee-driven, and local efforts impact the Asheville and surrounding Appalachian Mountain regions.

This year we’re partnering with Mountain Home VAMC in Johnson City, Tennessee again to make an even bigger impact for a great cause in our collective mountain communities. Last year the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System Team collectively raised 26,566.6 pounds of food and water.

That’s 11.28 pounds per full time employee!

Charles George VA Medical Center donations will be made to Manna Food Bank in Asheville, while the health care system’s VA Clinics in Hickory, Franklin and Forest City will provide food to food Banks in their respective neighborhoods.

Vying for the Mountain Cup, the competition centers on both health care systems’ employees bringing in voluntary food donations to see which can bring in the most weight in food items. Individual services are competing amongst themselves within each facility to be top service.  The services here in Asheville are also competing against the equivalent service at Mountain Home, (example: WNCVAHCS Nursing vs. Mountain Home Nursing). Whichever location wins the overall competition by bringing in the most weight in food items will receive the traveling trophy and bragging rights.

The competition is done in fun, but most importantly, the VA medical centers are collectively making a difference for local mountain communities.
