Chili goddess: Cynthia Lynn Stacy says to just call her “Thea.” It’s her “Goddess name” and the one she uses for Thea’s Kitchen — her online recipe book, of sorts. A Highlands-based cook, writer, musician and grandmother, Thea features her latest concoctions on her Web site (www.theaskitchen.com), where the recipes are also archived when new ones go up. Featured this month is “Thea’s Organic Cowgirl Chili,” which she debuted at the most recent Highlands Chili Cookoff. It’s one among many recipes Thea will include in her forthcoming book, Thea’s ‘Organic’ Kitchen.
Good food, good cause: Plan ahead for a tasty and fun-filled benefit. On Friday, April 29, Celine & Company Catering will host a fundraiser for Children First of Buncombe County, a local nonprofit that funds a plethora of child-support programs. The company is donating food creations, use of its “On Broadway” event venue, staff support and much more. The event will feature music by local band Tuxedo Junction and an exhibition of photographs by young artists from Buncombe County’s Emma community. The three-hour festivity begins at 7 p.m. at 49 Broadway in downtown Asheville; tickets are $40 per person and are available from Children First (259-9717). For more information about the organization, visit www.childrenfirstbc.org.
Frankenfood?: As debates rage over the potential health and environmental risks of genetically modified foods, Earth Fare, the health-food grocery at Asheville’s Westgate Shopping Center, is hosting a free talk about what’s at stake. Michael Wohlfield — a naturopathic educator who calls his presentation “GMO Food — Blessing or Curse?!?” — will delve into the topic at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. For more information, call Earth Fare at 253-7656 or visit www.earthfare.com.
