Blue Moon blues:After more than a decade of providing sweet treats, heavenly breads and savory sandwiches to the Asheville community, the Blue Moon Bakery at 60 Biltmore Ave. has closed its doors for good. “We just didn’t have the sales to keep it going,” Marin Mitchell, one of the establishment’s six co-owners, told Xpress. “When this place opened 13 years ago, it was one of a kind,” she noted, but with the proliferation of downtown bakeries, sandwich shops and other competition, “there’s just not much that sets us apart any more.” Longtime fans of the sunny eatery beg to differ, of course, and Mitchell says that so many loyal customers have been asking for Blue Moon recipes, “We’re toying with the idea of writing a cookbook.” For now, a tearful bye-bye to Blue Moon.
Because dad hates doilies: Couldn’t dream of your dad sipping mimosas out of delicate stemware? Well, who says real men don’t eat brunch? Season’s restaurant at the Highland Lake Inn in Flat Rock has constructed a decidedly manly repast for Father’s Day. Their Sunday Brunch Buffet Spectacular will feature such rock-ribbed fare as hearty beef chili, oysters Rockefeller, pilsner-steamed littleneck clams, mesquite-roasted pork and even a baked potato bar. Coffee on Clingman: There’s a new kid in Asheville’s River District. The chef-owned and operated Clingman Ave. Coffee and Catering Company recently opened its doors in a seemingly tucked-away location just past the Grey Eagle Tavern at 242 Clingman Ave. If the business level on Memorial Day was any indication, locals seem to have had no trouble finding this new spot. The menu is deli-esque, focusing on high quality, seasonal ingredients, fair trade and organic coffees, and local and organic produce whenever possible.
