Goth-hop: Female hip-hop duo Dark Sister may appear young and innocent, but the pair's atmospheric beats are as menacing as their rhymes are vulgar. Not to mention the duo’s live show, which often finds them writhing on the floor covered in blood. The Tennessee natives get dark and scary at The Odditorium on Saturday, May 25.
More than words: If you live in Asheville and aren't familiar with Floating Action, nothing we can say will rectify this grave oversight. Suffice it to say that the surf/soul/rock/everything-awesome outfit is a local treasure that never disappoints. And that's not just coming from us. Earlier this year, My Morning Jacket's Jim James (an enthusiastic convert to the band) called the band’s 2011 release, Desert Etiquette, "a relatively unknown masterwork of our times." Behind the Mic
Asheville FM hosts dozens of weekly shows that run the gamut of musical styles and tastes (you name it, they've got it). But don't take our word for it: take theirs. Xpress brings you this weekly feature — direct from the DJs — highlighting a few of the station's stellar offerings. www.ashevillefm.org.
Pool Party is chilled drinks and blended beats — an hour of fresh music, continuously mixed for your listening pleasure. Indie, electro-pop, house, nu-jazz, nu-soul, worldbeat, downtempo and whatever floats. Dive right in or saunter up to the edge, because the water is always warm and everybody is beautiful. Hosted by Loungesport. Sundays from 6-7 p.m. Photo by Max Cooper

Thanks for reading through to the end…
We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
