• Phyllis Sultan reports that although her painter son Donald has received honorary doctorates from two other prestigious universities, he is especially thrilled to have one from UNC-Asheville. “In spite of what Thomas Wolfe said, it is really nice to come back home,” she says.
• Haen Gallery has new work by two area artists, Werner Haker and Larry Gray. Does this mean a new direction? Other artists have been from other places.
• Carl Raphael has written a children’s book called The Happy Tavern, and is looking for an illustrator. There’s no information about the age of the children the book targets, but you can e-mail him at happytavern@yahoo.com.
• Postcards from the Edge is coming again, scheduled for Oct. 5 this year. All the proceeds will go toward the restoration and replacement of Dirk Cruser’s “Energy Loop.” Two divisions include one for students of any age, and another for adults. All cards will be $25. Artists can pick up blanks at the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department, at Asheville Art Museum, or at the Asheville Area Arts Council.
