Austin-based musician Mike Gray performs “Mind Was Gone” (a song he performs with local band Screaming Js) in downtown Asheville, NC, on a modified guitar-based percussion instrument of his own creation. Gray, formerly of Asheville-based all-star group The Firecracker Jazz Band, says that the instrument was inspired by Asheville-based folk artist and performer Robert Seven’s “Go Box” creations. Gray performs with Hank West & the Smokin’ Hots and The Firecracker Jazz Band at Mo-Daddy’s Bar & Grill on Saturday, Jan. 7, and on Tuesday, Jan. 10, with Screaming Js at Bobo Gallery.
