The Grey Eagle announced today that the venue will host Gillian Welch on Monday, April 26, for a rare show of her material. She’ll be joined by Dave Rawlings.
By contrast, the two recently played the Orange Peel (with Dave Rawlings Machine), drawing a sell-out crowd (at nearly twice the capacity).
Welch is known for her harmony-laden, sparse-but-innovative take on American music — old-time, ballads, folk songs. She and Rawlings have a rarely-matched musical chemistry, a clever songwriting style and a knack for pulling out old standards and sprucing them up. They’ll be fresh off the Ramble at the Ryman gig, with Levon Helm in Nashville.
The wise will get tickets asap for this one. $25.
Thanks for reading through to the end…
We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
Surprised it hasn’t sold out yet. It always blows me away how a town the size of Asheville gets so many great shows.
Hey, hey, I’m wise.
