Goombay! returns this year, with a bit of a facelift. The YMI Center and Powerhaus Productions have joined forces to produce the 31st annual African and Caribbean cultural festival, Friday-Sunday, August 24-26.
As before, the festivities center around the block — Eagle and Market Streets. But, as the event’s website notes, “We have big plans for this year…including adding a new stage and a Friday night block party with headlining acts at The Orange Peel and Diana Wortham Theatre.”
The Orange Peel part of that is a performance by Atlanta-based hip-hop collective Arrested Development, best known for ‘90s hits like “Mr. Wendal” and “People Everyday.” Read an interview with Arrested Development’s Speech, here. The Goombay! presents Arrested Development show at the Orange Peel is open to all ages and starts at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26. Tickets are $22 in advance or $25 day of show.
Diana Wortham Theatre shows have not yet been announced.
