So, a duet is two and a quartet is four. But what the heck is a Mu’tet? Well, it’s what you have if you’re internationally known saxophonist Jeff Coffin. Because he’s a composer, teacher and winner of three Grammys, so if he wants a Mu’tet, that’s what he gets.
The band — Felix Pastorius (Yellowjackets) on electric bass, Bill Fanning on trumpet, Derico Watson (Victor Wooten Band) on drums, and Chris Walters (JD Souther) on keys — is actually a quintet these days, and they’re touring in support of 2011 2-CD release, Jeff Coffin & the Mu’tet LIVE!.
Coffin has been a member of the Dave Matthews Band and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones; he’s recorded with Umphrey’s McGee and two WNC-based musicians: Jeff Sipe and Jonathan Scales. He plays Pisgah Brewing this Thursday, April 12 at 9 p.m. $12 in advance or $15 day of show.
Xpress will give away a pair of tickets to this show on Wednesday, in the 1 p.m. hour, on Facebook. Photo by Roxanne Haynes.
I’ve seen a lot of stupid things on the internet in my life, but a guy blowing on two saxophones at once is easily top five material.
