Take the plunge

WNC is in the midst of an unusually warm winter, so if you’ve been meaning to dunk yourself into a freezing cold lake, 2013 is the year to take the Polar Plunge.

The annual New Year’s Polar Plunge will return to the Lake Lure beach on Tuesday, Jan 1. Registration is from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. and the swimmers take their mark at noon. Prizes will be awarded for best costume, youngest and oldest swimmer and the brave soul who traveled the farthest. Costumes are encouraged, although all that’s required is a bathing suit.

Would you rather watch than swim? Hot chocolate, cookies and a bonfire will keep you warm while the fools rush in. A $15 registration fee benefits local volunteer fire departments and swimmers receive an official toboggan (while supplies last). Free for spectators.
