Toubab Krewe’s “Cluck Old Hen”

In advance of Toubab Krewe‘s headlining set at Asheville Earth Day, check out the band’s new video for “Cluck Old Hen.”

The video, set at the white barn on the campus of Warren Wilson College, was shot over two nights late last summer. Xpress reporter Jake Frankel blogged about the making of the video and posted a photo shoot.

“Cluck Old Hen” is an old-time tune — one that’s often taught in old-time music classes by Warren Wilson College’s Wayne Erbsen. It’s pretty likely Erbsen never envisioned the tune quite in the way that Toubab Krewe has revamped it. Guests Rayna Gellert (fiddle) and Roosevelt Collier of The Lee Boy (pedal steel) make guest appearances. Collier’s transformation from a farmer to a blistering soloist is one of the video’s most transcendent moments.

Read a recent interview with Toubab Krewe here. See them perform at Asheville Earth Day on Saturday, April 16 (held at Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.). Watch the video for “Cluck Old Hen” here:

Image trumps substance every time, eh?

I guess an old time song isn’t worth dirt unless it has a video featuring the next struggling theater troupe trying to find work between vaudeville shows in town and abroad.

    Why, Rayna, why?

All I’m saying is that I love Rayna and her pop’s fiddle playing. When it’s mixed with pop music, well, call it this week’s excuse to have a picture on this website.
