Winter-beater

Meg Gordon

• Who she is: Meg Gordon

• What she’s wearing: A vintage faux-fur trimmed coat purchased, years ago, at Time Warp in Atlanta.

• Why we love it: One of the best things about vintage wear is that it never goes out of style — unlike the season’s latest coat designs which, though likely inspired by retro looks, won’t shine as brightly next winter. The bold design of Meg’s zip-front coat dresses up her everyday work attire, while adding whimsy. Meg’s tip: Keep retro finds in shape with regular repairs.

Try this on

• Just opened: Union (18 Haywood St., 259-3300) is a stylish and easily navigable boutique with must-haves for men and women. Shop for jeans, button-down shirts, fun bags, puffer jackets and vests. The shop carries popular labels like Penguin and Ben Sherman.

• Shoe addicts, here’s your fix: BishUp’s Designs Boutique (68 College St., 251-1139) carries designer-inspired mules, sling backs, pumps and boots in satins, velvets and sequins. A sales associate points out that dressy boots are perfect for dress-down Asheville style. “Anything with jewels is hot,” she advises. “You put on your jeans and your jeweled boots and you’re ready to go.” Here’s the best part: The shop’s priciest footware tops out at a very reasonable $84.
