The 5th annual biking event to benefit Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care, Arts for Life, Sports Outreach and Mountain Area Pregnancy Services adds a new element this year: hiking the Appalachian Trail. On June 3 and 4, participants in Bike and Hike for Life can chose to bike or hike to support some great organizations that span one’s lifetime.

APD asks for assistance identifying armed robbery suspect
Yesterday (Monday, May 17) afternoon at approximately 3:30 p.m. the Asheville Police Department responded to reports of an armed robbery at Telco Community Credit Union (36 Tunnel Road). The suspect entered the bank, passed a note to the teller demanding money and displayed a knife.

City of Asheville to host Wilma Dykeman celebration
Asheville residents are invited to a community celebration of Wilma Dykeman’s birthday from 4-6 p.m. this Friday, May 20, in Jean Webb Park, 30 Riverside Drive. The Asheville Police Department has charged Nathaniel Elijah Dixon with 1st Degree Murder of an Unborn Child. Dixon was taken into custody in Columbus, Ohio on the evening of Thursday, May 12th and charged with 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 1st Degree Murder and Child Abuse resulting in Serious Bodily Injury for the murder of Candace Elaine Pickens and attempted murder of her son, Zachaeus Latese Waters.
Local authors spread the love of disc golf with new book
A pair of college professors from the Asheville-area have a new, comprehensive book about disc golf. The duo is on shelves at bookstores and they have upcoming appearances at Pisgah Brewing Company and Barnes & Noble.
Breweries help fuel Bike to Work Week
National Bike to Work Week kicks off Monday, May 16, and the initiative is getting a boost from a slew of local breweries. Each night, from May 16-20, a different brewery will host a bike-centric bash, culminating with proceeds from all events being presented to local nonprofits Asheville on Bikes and Friends of Connect Buncombe.
