The Profiler

Wondering what to expect at Moogfest? Let the Profiler help. The Moogmom She’s hip, she’s happening, she’ll be happy if just one person would ask to see her I.D. Possible Problem: She usually falls asleep before Top Chef  is over. Problem Solved: Her son’s Adderall and the ability to drink four Diet Cokes at one […]

President Clinton visits Asheville ***UPDATED WITH VIDEO OF THE SPEECH***

Thousands of people welcomed former President Bill Clinton to Asheville today. He was here stumping for Congressman Heath Shuler, in a hotly contested race with Republican Jeff Miller for the 11th District Congressional seat. The Rally took place at City County Plaza in downtown Asheville, and while the program was scheduled to start at 12:30pm,  the former president — true to form — was running late and finally took the stage at 1:45. In the meantime, the crowd was treated to some rousing music by local jazz great Kat Williams.  Report, slideshow and aggregated Twitter feed after the jump. Photo by Michael Muller

Elitist Bastards: Reviewers, Extremely Dangerous

In this week’s Elitist Bastards Go To The Movies, Xpress film critics Ken Hanke and Justin Souther discuss current releases Waiting for “Superman”, I Want Your Money, N-Secure, RED, Never Let Me Go and Jackass 3D. They also discuss From Beyond, this week’s Thursday Horror Picture Show, and The Cat and the Canary, next week’s Asheville Film Society screening. And to top it all off, the speculate on the quality of upcoming releases You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Hereafter and Paranormal Activity 2.

i-Dose

Hide the children.       Lock your doors. Kiss your loved ones goodbye.       There's a new drug craze in town. You've probably heard about it by now. It'd be hard not to, with the media in such a tizzy over it. They call it i-Dosing: a "digital drug" that people claim […]

The Suspect: Perpetual Groove These Georgia natives have been making music together since 1997, playing their style of improvisational jam-band rock.  The group has been reinvigorated by the addition of keyboardist John Hruby, and they’ve recently released two new studio CDs, the full length Heal, and the EP Honey Cuts. Can Be Found: The Orange […]

It’s a greens scene

‘Round these parts, people have a serious need for greens. Fortunately, area farmers feed that need by growing almost every variety under the sun. Hal Oliver of Oliver Organics in Hendersonville grows at least 15 different types of greens. While he grows many you’re likely familiar with, including collards, kale and green cabbage, he doesn’t […]

The best? Who says!

OK, so I reviewed Mountain Xpress’ “2010 Best Of WNC,” and I have to say that, after looking at one business that swept the categories, I am concerned that your “Best of” issue is not doing the community or the visitors to Asheville justice. In fact, it is misleading! What is the merit to "win" […]

Thanks WNC for showing your pride!

On Oct. 2, over 5,000 people gathered in downtown Asheville to celebrate, raise awareness and be entertained. Blue Ridge Pride 2010 was a huge success, and we are grateful to each and every person who made it possible. Thanks to our volunteers, vendors and sponsors. Thanks to the City of Asheville for your support of […]

I’m not so proud of gay pride

With regards to the article on the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer "Celebration" [”LGBTQ Celebration,” Sept. 29 Xpress], I feel compelled to announce clearly that those fringe elements don’t represent me as part of the “gay community." … My sexual orientation has nothing to do with making a public nuisance of myself and attempting to "in-your-face" my way into […]

Matters of state

Elections for the state Legislature don't typically generate the kind of interest that's accorded the more high-profile presidential or congressional contests. A lot of people don't know the names of the folks who represent them in Raleigh, and many voters couldn’t tell you what district they live in. North Carolina’s General Assembly includes 50 state […]

The celiac bandwagon

Rusty James did his part to capture the seriousness of the celiac epidemic the restaurant industry currently faces [“Some Restaurants Make a Fad of Gluten–Free,” Oct. 6 Xpress]. How does the industry cross the line between understanding and empathizing with the needs of its gluten-free diet clientele? Why have such restaurants not already learned how […]

The rivers need our help

We are a concerned group of year-three students at Buncombe County Early College. We are working on a project in our Earth/Environmental Science class that has to do with our environment and how it is affected by pollution. We are trying to raise awareness about the critical issue of keeping our rivers clean. We are […]

Cuff me, I’m a Democrat

Since when has it become a crime to be and say you are a Democrat? I'm fed up with being treated as if I should hide the fact that I am a Democrat and that I support the issues important to my political party. Democrats are citizens [who] respect belief in all religions — or […]

Medicaid left me helpless

My name is Tiffinei Lee, and I am a 25-year-old diabetic. I have had type-1 diabetes for 17 years. Each year has been harder than the last regarding my disease. I take up to 12 shots a day to control my diabetes and test my blood sugar up to six times a day. Five months […]

The Golden Rule: Be a bud

About two weeks ago, as I was driving on I-240 during a rainstorm towards Skyland, I noticed an older-model Buick with a flat tire. The person driving was an elderly woman. Immediately … I realized that I must stop and assist. The woman in need did not have a cell phone and was just waiting […]
