Good game, Wyvern’s Tale

The Wyvern's Tale on Merrimon Avenue is an awesome gaming store. The A.C. Reynolds High School Gaming club would like to thank the Wyvern's Tale for sponsoring our club in the 2012-2013 school year. Their generous donations of games and prizes for events helped make our club a huge success. The owner, Simeon Cogswell, has […]

Foreclosed

Between 1998 and 2012, home and business foreclosures in Western North Carolina increased by 89.4 percent — a rate more than 30 percent higher than the statewide increase of 53.8 percent for the same time period. Based on percent increase, Swain and Jackson counties were hardest hit, as foreclosures nearly quadrupled during those four years. […]

Jesus is my DJ

We are blessed to be able to pick up two great gospel stations in the asheville area: WKJV (1380 AM) and WGCR (720 AM). I urge you all to try these stations. I promise you that the good, ole' time preaching and music will change you life — it did mine. If it were not […]

She Said, She Said: Asheville Community Theatre’s Kiss Me Kate

“Kiss Me Kate” runs on Friday and Saturday evenings with a Sunday matinee through June 30th.  This Cole Porter musical opened on Broadway in 1948 and it earned the Tony for Best Musical.  The story within a story weaves together a musical production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with the on and off-stage relationship between Fred Graham, (played by John C. Hall) the show’s director, producer, and star, and his leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi (played by Wendy Morrison.) Mother-daughter reviewers Becky Upham and Cicely Upham discuss the local production.

Dispatches from the March Against Monsanto

More than 1,000 people gathered at Pack Square in downtown Asheville on May 26 to protest international company Monsanto, a leading producer of genetically engineered seeds. The rally and demonstration were part of "March Against Monsanto," involving 36 countries worldwide. Guest speakers, food activists, farmers, bee-keepers and chefs stood atop the multicolored "Magic Love Bus," […]

Local investments, local results

I love the “buy local” campaign for Buncombe County. As president of a locally owned bank, I know how important it is to have support from our neighbors. Putting our money to work locally is the way we grow as a community. When the May 22 Local Economy article called for examples of investing locally, […]

Beer, beer and still more beer

I can see enjoying some crafted beer now and then, though I don't drink beer myself. I'd rather Asheville be known for something far more progressive and important than Beer City USA, and I would rather see way fewer pages going toward both beer and food in Mountain Xpress every week. I miss articles on […]

Beer? Food? Next subject!

I used to like you guys a lot more. Back in the old days, I could read very informative articles in Mountain Xpress that dealt with the issues that confronted either a small portion or a big slice of Buncombe County, or Western North Carolina as a whole. I felt like you grabbed onto a […]

Mountain Xpress responds

Troy and Rob: We’re glad you care enough about Xpress to write us about what’s missing or overdone. In these post-recession times, the paper is slightly smaller than it used to be, which means we often make tough decisions about what to include or exclude (such as Tom Tomorrow). But we’ll have to differ on […]

Why on earth are you waving at me?

To my fellow Western North Carolina motorcycle riders: It's time to stop with the waving. It's foolish and, arguably, unsafe. I mean, riders are waving to each other across interstate medians now. First of all, that “left hand outstretched” gesture is a left-turn signal to those of us from the old school who ride bikes […]

In the Garden

Gardens that give A half-acre doesn’t sound like a lot of land, but it’s more than enough for The Lord’s Acre. This volunteer-based garden in Fairview grew more than 34 tons of organic produce in its first four years, which is quite a feat for a small, community-minded garden with a philanthropic mission. The […]

Clubland features: Sonen, Pressed And

Sweaty mess: Electronic dance-pop trio SONEN has a reputation for keeping crowds moving with its driving analog beats, male/female vocal harmonies and post-punk atmospheres. Creative Loafing's “Best Electronic Act of Atlanta” visits Asheville to steam up the Odditorium on Thursday, June 6. "Psychedelic drowning": Apothecary hosts a night of subdued, experimental electronics featuring the melodic […]

A.R.T. makes it hard to strive not to drive

I just read Jake Frankel’s May 22 article, Biking the Sharrows,” on biking as a way of “Striving Not to Drive.” All involved are to be congratulated, especially Council member Cecil Bothwell, who bicycles routinely. Meanwhile many dangerous streets in Asheville are too narrow for bike lanes, which leaves us dependent on Asheville Redefines Transit. […]
