Also, Tony Torn, son of actor Rip Torn, has a venue called The FBI (the French Broad Institute of Time and the River). The French Broad Institute will show the area’s only screening of […]

Mystic Mountain Mardi Gras
Asheville has, by some accounts, become a haven for New Orleans ex-pats. Perhaps it’s a shared enthusiasm for dressing in costumes. Or a love of great music and a lot of dancers. Or maybe it’s a sense of community—that ethereal, much-lauded and oft-coveted state—that pervades both places. Feathers, beads, face paint: Mardi Gras revelers dress […]
Welcome to A&E
How cool would it be if Asheville had a Moogseum? That’s a current goal of the Bob Moog Foundation: To create a museum of electronic music pioneer Moog’s extensive archives and have space for interactive instrument-based exhibits. To that end, the foundation, along with jam-favorites Umphrey’s McGee, will hold a benefit Saturday, Feb. 21, at […]

A dark day for local Phish fans
Most of the 180 or so fans gathered outside the Asheville Civic Center waiting for Phish tickets were mightily disappointed the morning of Friday, Jan. 30. Tickets for the band’s June 9 concert sold out in virtually in seconds, with an error in the Ticketmaster computer system apparently releasing the 400 tickets that were supposed […]

For all this world-at-the-keystrokes opportunity, how often do we truly go somewhere foreign? Not physically, just moving the mind from its sometimes small, selfish place—how often do we give over to the meditation of listening? Wise, sweet, cunning: The poet Taha Muhammad Ali is pictured in the center shot. From left to right, visiting poets […]
Moonshine and mountain duels
Listening to Tom Godleski’s Fresh Preserves is kind of like being invited to browse a friend’s weathered photo album or watch his old home movies. It’s the same intimacy but without the obligation—Godleski’s ballads, spun from the tales told to him by family members, are actually interesting. Grampy and Granny were tough: Above, Buncombe Turnpike […]
Run don’t walk to the Howlies this afternoon
“Fans of sweet, harmonizing, destructo garage TAKE NOTE!” say the folks at Static Age Records. The Atlanta-based band (and recent POPAsheville alums) will make an in-store appearance at Static Age on Lexington Avenue before bringing their mighty fine rock ‘n roll to the New French Bar tonight.
Phish tickets error explained
Demand had never been so high for an Asheville Civic Center show, said Sherman Bass, the venue’s executive director. Staff had put a hold on tickets through the computer system, live operator phone system and through sales at Ticketmaster outlets (such as record stores). But because they didn’t also restrict sales through Ticketmaster’s automated system, the tickets still sold out.
Sad day for some Asheville Phish fans
Tickets for Phish’s June 9 show sold out in what seemed like seconds; despite the Civic Center’s 400-seat allotment. An error in the system released the tickets before Asheville fans could buy them, said the Civic Center’s executive director.
First in line for Phish tickets
Undaunted by wind and cold, a small crowd of Phish faithful camped outside the Asheville Civic Center Wednesday, waiting for tickets to go on sale Friday morning.
Asheville Lyric Opera celebrates 10 years of song
Like a first love, eight out of 10 people remember their first opera, says David Craig Starkey, director of Asheville Lyric Opera. Soprano Angela Brown performs as Verdi’s Aida. Trees come down at Health Adventure site, rankling neighbors
First the chainlink fences and No Trespassing signs went up. Then the trees came down. Over the Jan. 10 weekend, workers cut down most of the trees on the site of the future Momentum Science and Health Adventure Park, which will be the Health Adventure’s new, expanded home. Health Adventure President and CEO Paige Johnson […]

could we keep track of everything? But it’s also bad because there’s never enough space for All the Awesome Stuff Happening in Asheville every week. Velcroheads: The “how-did-they-think-of-that” choreography of performance art troupe Galumpha. The Diana Wortham Theatre, for example, has a great-looking roster of events planned for the spring. But Galumpha may take their […]
