In a statement released this morning, Tuesday, May 19, Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, said the plan to close Duke Energy’s coal-fired plant in Asheville is “the right thing for its customers, public health, and the environment.”
Duke Energy to retire Asheville coal plant
Duke Energy announced that it will be retiring its Asheville power plant within four to five years. The company will invest $750 million to build a 650-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant and install solar generators at the site, but local environmental groups say the proposal “is inconsistent with the clean energy vision we have called for.”
