Bowen Bridge sees more traffic than any other stretch of highway in Western North Carolina.
Afternoon fender-benders are the norm. And for drivers who cross the bridge every day, knowing just when to jockey for the lane they need has become as familiar as finding their own brake pedal.
So where does building a new bridge rank on the state’s list of future road projects in WNC? Try sixth.
Local officials have begun pushing back against what they say is a mismatch between what the community wants — fast action on a Bowen Bridge bypass — and what DOT’s new data-driven planning process says it will get.
“While the data has been very helpful, it doesn’t fully reflect the need in our community that (the bridge) be the top priority,” said state Rep. Nathan Ramsey, R – Buncombe. “There are factors that sometimes data may not fully include.”
