As the methods for testing fish to find potentially harmful toxins has improved, the state has added seven new waterways to its fish consumption advisories.
The state health department has added advisories for the Catawba River, Cedar Creek Reservoir, Fishing Creek Reservoir, Great Pee Dee River, Lake Wateree, Lake Wylie and Wateree River after finding toxic pollutants in fish widespread enough to warrant concern.
Yet, getting the public to heed those warnings — even those for Upstate waterways that have been in effect for decades — has become a greater challenge.
