Accidental wastewater spill at Swannanoa Correctional Center

Press release from North Carolina Department of Public Safety:

An estimated 2,500 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged accidentally on March 29, 2021 from the Swannanoa Correctional Center through a manhole cover on Hospital Drive. The untreated wastewater was discharged into a small, unnamed tributary of the Swannanoa River.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on March 30, 2021, and is reviewing the matter. The Department of Public Safety is investigating the cause of the accidental discharge, and will take action necessary to prevent future such discharges.
