Press release

Asheville City Schools Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a new three-year regional initiative to expand its advocacy efforts beyond Asheville to a regional level. Mountain Allies for Public Schools (MAPS) will create a strong network of public education supporters in the 16-county region of Western North Carolina (WNC). After the network is formed, partner organizations will have established communication channels and relationships that can carry the positive successes happening daily in public schools.

MAPS was made possible by a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. “The grant has allowed us to hire a part time staff member devoted to uniting individuals and organizations to advocate for real and lasting support of high-quality public education,” said Steve Agan, ACSF board member and advocacy committee chair.

The new Advocacy Coordinator, Spencer Cranfill shared, “MAPS seeks to break down the silos of education supporters who are spread out across our region. Working collectively, we can create an incredible regional voice for Raleigh to hear.” Cranfill was also recently accepted as a fellow in EPFP (Education Policy Fellowship Program) where he will expand the MAPS network and gain insight on policy making in education.

MAPS welcomes the community to submit ‘good news’ spotlights to share with the network of supporters. Does your child have a great teacher? Did your high school student win an award? Do you know a teacher who should be recognized for excellence? Please contact Spencer@acsf.org for information on ways the community can get involved in supporting our public schools.
