Alan Reid of The Battlefield Band performs at White Horse, Oct. 3

Press release from White Horse Black Mountain:

Alan Reid: Founding Member of Scotland’s Legendary Battlefield Band

Saturday, October 3 – 7:30 p.m.- Alan Reid. Modern and traditional folk. $10 advance/ $12 door

The early 1970s witnessed an explosion of new bands in Scotland and Ireland that attracted legions of new fans to traditional music with fresh arrangements and youthful energy. One of the most influential and long-running was Scotland’s Battlefield Band, named for a suburb of Glasgow. Keyboardist and vocalist Alan Reid was with the band from 1969 until 2010, becoming a featured songwriter and providing continuity through the Batties’ various incarnations. The first musician to make keyboards an integral part of a Celtic folk band, Reid’s rhythms and harmonizations anchored the trademark bagpipe and fiddle interplay provided by a changing cast of virtuoso players. He sometimes jokes that he’s been in many good bands, but they’ve all been called the Battlefield Band.

Since his departure from the band Reid’s original songs have come to the fore. He’s is a gifted singer and songwriter, and he researches his subjects in depth whether addressing contemporary concerns or spinning stories from the past. Recent projects have included a song cycle about naval hero John Paul Jones and Rough Diamonds, a CD on modern and traditional Scottish themes produced with frequent collaborator and touring partner Rob Van Sante. The result is a strong catalog of lyrical and melodic narratives that Reid embroiders with keyboard, accordion and guitar textures, delivered with conviction and authority that comes from a lifetime of making music.

Show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 advance/ $12 door.
