APD arrests man who failed to show for court on sex crimes, other charges

Asheville Police Department detectives and officers arrested a man in west Asheville Wednesday afternoon for failing to show in court on sex crimes charges, as well as having multiple open warrants and drug charges.  Five others were also charged and arrested on warrants.

The officers located the known offender, Derek Dewain Carpenter, 33, near the 200 block of Deaverview Road around 3 p.m. Wednesday.  Carpenter had failed to appear in court on a pending rape charge in the county, and orders for his arrest as well as pretrial violations were issued for him.  He also has warrants for a number of other crimes, including stealing a firearm and fleeing from officers in a stolen vehicle.

When officers made contact with Carpenter, he decided to flee on foot into the nearby woods; officers pursued and caught him, finding suspected methamphetamine and fentanyl on his person.
