APD seeking identity of suspect in attempted kidnapping

Press release from Asheville Police Department:

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 27 the Asheville Police Department (APD) responded to a report of an attempted larceny of a motor vehicle at the Westgate Shopping Center (30 Westgate Parkway). When officers arrived, they found that the victim parked her vehicle outside of the UPS store and left it running for a few seconds while she dropped off a package. She turned to see a male suspect enter her vehicle and attempt to drive away with her one-month old child inside.

The suspect was unsuccessful in his attempts to steal the vehicle and fled on foot away from the car after a number of bystanders came to the victim’s aid. Fortunately, the mother and her child were unharmed.

The suspect is described as being a white male, approximately 6′ 1″, long black hair, and was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. The suspect was carrying a backpack with a floral design. He was last seen running across the parking lot of the shopping center toward Westgate Parkway.

If anyone has information that they believe could assist with the investigation, they are encouraged to call 828-252-1110. Detectives are currently working diligently to identify the suspect and take him into custody.
