Arc 5K March Run Walk kicks off the Asheville Grand Prix Racing Series

Asheville, N.C. – On March 7, young and old are invited to lace up and kick off the region’s race season with the Arc 5k March Run Walk. In its second year, the race starts and finishes at Vance Monument in downtown Asheville.

The race benefits The Arc of Buncombe County (The Arc), which serves children and adults with moderate-to-significant intellectual disabilities, most of whom also have physical disabilities. Funds from the 5K will be used to help support the operations of The Arc, which includes providing housing case management and health and wellness services. Each year, The Arc assists over 1,300 individuals through our various programs and services. Following The Arc 5k will be the Downtown Dribble, part of the weekend-long SoCon Championship taking place in Asheville.

“We are extremely excited about having this opportunity to partner with the SoCon to be able to provide a 5K Run/Walk as part of their basketball and wrestling weekend. We hope that fans of the SoCon will support children and adults with disabilities by running or walking in our 5K,” said Arc of Buncombe County Executive Director Terry Bellamy.

SoCon organizers are looking forward to celebrating the region’s athleticism and supporting a worthy cause.

“The Southern Conference is extremely excited to once again have The Arc of Buncombe County involved in the week of festivities surrounding the Southern Conference Basketball and Wrestling Championships in Asheville. The 5k is a great lead-in to the Downtown Dribble, which will take place immediately after the finish of the race and will also begin at Pack Square. The Arc does great work and is a great cause and we are looking forward to a great turnout on Saturday morning,” said Jordan Gotfredson Trolinger, Southern Conference.

New to this year, The Arc 5k is the first race of the Asheville Track Club’s Grand Prix competition, which invites people to compete against other track club members for a chance to win cash prizes. Races are encourages to run five selected races to qualify for an age group award and 10 for a chance at an overall award. Points are given for participation and speed.

“This competition is exciting, challenging and rewarding. Race with your friends and meet new ones. Select your races, work on a strategy and most importantly … have fun!” said Sherry Stoneman with the Asheville Track Club.

The Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission is also supporting both events in an effort to continue to put Asheville on the map when it comes to athletics.

“Asheville hopes to create a weekend full of activities both on and off the court for everyone attending the Basketball Championships and a 5k is a perfect addition,” said Ben VanCamp, Executive Director of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission.

Registration is $25 in advance of the race. More information can be found at http://thearc5kmarchrunwalk.com.
