Press release from the Art League of Henderson County:
Several times during the year, Art League of Henderson County members are challenged to create works of a particular subject or style. One of the most popular “challenge” shows the ALHC holds for its members each year is the January Miniature Show. Typically members submit works much larger than the 8” x 8” maximum size permitted for this show. Some embrace the size limitation, others, not so much.
“I love the freedom of sweeping strokes on a large canvas,” said Barbara Remensnyder, “but welcome the challenge of working in miniature,” she acknowledged. Remensnyder’s small alcohol inks are a popular item at the Gallery at Flat Rock. She also works quite tiny to create alcohol ink jewelry, as well as on much larger paintings in other media.
Nancy Smeltzer, an artist who uses large beaded art quilts as her usual medium, finds the small size to be somewhat constraining. “With my art quilts, I can keep adding on buttons and beads until I’m pleased with the effect,” she explains. “In a small space, every element has to work for its place in the composition and not overwhelm what was already there.” Smeltzer was thus pleased to be awarded the Viewer’s Choice Award in the 2016 Mini Show for her piece, “Coral Reefs.”
Although only members are permitted to enter the monthly exhibits and special featured “challenges,” the league welcomes new local and regional artists to join and participate. Interested artists should visit the ALHC website at www.artleague.net or its Facebook page to learn more about this long-standing art organization. Any artist wishing to enter a show may join before or at the Friday delivery date on January 6th between 9 to 9:30 a.m. at the Opportunity House, 1411 Asheville Hwy. Individual artist membership is $45 for the calendar year. Members may enter up to two miniatures with a $5 entry fee for each. Members may also bring up to two paintings to hang along the hallways of the Opp House for consideration as Artist of the Month. Gift certificates provided by Starving Artist are given to winners. All art must be framed and wired for hanging. No gator-type hooks are allowed. Art should be priced to sell.
The Art League is composed of artists of many media and skill sets, as well as those who wish to support the arts in their community. It allows for exchange of ideas, artistic opportunities, and resources. The Art League of Henderson County is open to all who are interested in fine art, both artists and patrons. The next meeting will be Sunday, January 8, at Opportunity House, 1411 Asheville Highway, Hendersonville. (There is ample on-site and handicapped-accessible parking.) A social time begins at 1:30 pm, with a short business meeting beginning at 2 pm. An art related presentation then follows until about 3:30 pm. Guests are welcome. For more information, visit the ALHC website at www.artleague.net.
