Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at Revolve, March 2

Press release from MAP Revolve:

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
MAP Revolve to host Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in partnership with the international campaign Art + Feminism on Saturday, March 2nd from 11am-5pm.

Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors were women. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of representation from women.

On Saturday March 2nd you will have the opportunity to gather with others to change this in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. MAP Revolve, located at 821 Riverside Drive in Asheville, will host a six hour Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.  MAP Revolve is partnering with the international campaign Art+Feminism and UNCA New Media professor Victoria Bradbury to bring this one day only event to Asheville.

“I am excited to bring some of my New Media students to work alongside me to help people with the technical aspects of editing, as well as with adding and improving the entries” states Bradbury.

MAP/Revolve Board President Ursula Gullow is also excited to participate. She participated in a similar event in Asheville in 2015 and had this to say about the experience:

“Learning how to create and edit Wikipedia entries has been one of the most empowering actions I’ve made as a feminist and media activist. It’s really exciting to be able to contribute to such a huge catalogue of knowledge created by people from all over the world. I think there is a misconception that anyone can post any kind of information on Wikipedia, but it is actually moderated heavily by peers, and anything that is added to it has to be substantiated.  Wikipedia is an amazing example of a successful non-hierarchical, self-regulated system, free of corporate influence and easily accessible to all.”

No experience necessary, Wikipedia editing experts and enthusiasts will be on hand to explain the process and help create content.  Resource material, refreshments and childcare will be provided! Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. As an arts organization Revolve will focus on adding content about women artists who have been ignored or neglected on the site. We invite people of all gender identities and expressions to participate!
