Asheville Museum of Science hosts virtual Earth Month celebrations

Press release from Asheville Museum of Science:

In honor of Earth Day, the Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is hosting virtual, earth-friendly themed activities throughout the month.

April 22 is Earth Day, a global holiday to recognize the beginning of the environmental movement. The origins of Earth Day go back to 1970 when society vocalized concern for environmental consciousness. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and to honor this celebration, AMOS has created fun virtual events and challenges for
at-home STEM education.

“At AMOS it is our privilege and responsibility to not only deliver science, but to inform and educate visitors and followers of the everyday actions that can be taken to protect our environment.” said Amanda Bryant, AMOS Executive Director. “While we can’t be together on Earth Day, we hope you will find ways to be an earth ambassador virtually and in your own home. Join AMOS as we celebrate and work to preserve clean air, land, and water through education!”

JOIN AMOS:
April 13th and April 16th
This week’s “Daily Dose of Science” focuses on conservation. Join AMOS to learn about composting and water conservation.

While AMOS is closed to the public and unable to provide STEM education through field trips and afterschool, the museum is providing a “Daily Dose of Science” so the science never stops! Content includes videos, activities, worksheets, and other science-related material for students to enjoy and explore at home!

April 16th, 7PM
Calling all adults! Join AMOS for a unique live Science Pub experience online “Radon, the monster in your basement”.
Get comfortable and grab a beer or create a radon cocktail as you learn all about this common toxin. RECIPE: Mix 2oz of vodka, 6oz of OJ, and 4oz of soda water.

April 17th, 3:30PM
Join AMOS for a Facebook Live conversation with Dr. George Heard, a professor of chemistry at UNC Asheville. Dr. Heard will guide viewers through a conversation about Protecting our Planet through Chemistry!
The NEW weekly “Ask a Scientist” segment gives everyone the opportunity to ask questions and chat with real scientists! Scientists will answer your submitted questions on Friday or via live chat. Send questions to edu@ashevillescience.org or comment on the event posting on AMOS social media channels.

April 22nd
EARTH DAY!!! Join the AMOS Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Activity Challenge. The challenge is to use household disposables to create something new! Check out the AMOS social media post and website for a guide with examples to inspire creation. Post the final creation and tag AMOS through Instagram or Facebook, or send a picture by email to: edu@ashevillescience.org. Creations will be shared through the museum newsletter and social media throughout the week.
