Asheville Police seeking public help in identifying sidewalk stabbing suspect

Press release from Asheville Police Department:

Asheville, NC (Jan. 19, 2022):   Asheville Police responded to a verbal altercation between two men at the 40 block of Merrimon Tuesday that resulted in one man stabbed in the leg and the other man fleeing the scene.

APD officers responded to the report of an assault with a deadly weapon on the corner of Merrimon Ave. and I-240 around 3:40 p.m. Tuesday.  When they arrived on scene, they found one man lying on the sidewalk with an apparent stab wound to his leg; AFD and EMS provided treatment at the scene, and the victim refused transport to the hospital.

Upon their investigation, officers determined that two men got into a verbal altercation over a panhandling spot when the suspect stabbed the victim.  The suspect left the scene prior to the officers’ arrival.  Officers interviewed the victim and those present at the scene, as well as reviewed area surveillance video footage.

Police have very few details on the suspect, except to say that those at the scene say he is a tall white male with long hair.

Police are asking your help with any information that will lead to the identity of the suspect.  You can contact APD directly at (828) 252-1110.  Or you send an anonymous tip using the TIP2APD smartphone application (search “Asheville PD” in your app store) or by texting TIP2APD to 847411.
