On Saturday, November 3, Asheville School will host the second annual Shakespeare and Friends Day, a day of workshops led by professionals from the American Shakespeare Center based in Staunton, Virginia, and the North Carolina Stage Company (NC Stage) based in Asheville, North Carolina.
Part of Asheville School’s Community Arts Initiative, Shakespeare and Friends Day aims to bring Asheville School students together with students from other high schools to learn from local and regional professional stage actors.
Asheville School’s Humanities and Fine Arts Department are excited to host NC Stage and the American Shakespeare Center.
The American Shakespeare Center offers workshops around the nation and strives to recover “the joys and accessibility of Shakespeare’s theatre, language, and humanity by exploring the English Renaissance stage and its practices through performance and education.”
NC Stage brings 17 years of experience offering professional productions in downtown Asheville. The company has received recognition from the North Carolina Theatre Conference, Dramatists Guild of America, and the American Theatre Wing, and continuously strives to connect people to plays that illuminate the shared human experience.
Student workshops include “Shakespeare in Action,” in which attendees will learn combat techniques for the stage; “Embedded Stage Directions: Finding Clues in the Text,” during which students will combine textual analysis with performance; and “Character Play: Physical and Vocal,” a workshop that teaches students how to enhance characterization through tone, movement and stage presence.
There is also a workshop for teachers. “ROADS to Rhetoric: An Introduction to Rhetorical Figures for the Classroom” will help teachers learn to walk their students through rhetorical devices used by Shakespeare that can help students garner a deeper understanding of the characters and context of his works.
The workshops are open to students in eighth through twelfth grades, and any teacher interested in learning about strategies to use in text analysis in their classroom.
