Author of book on Word of Faith religious cult to read at Malaprops

Author Debby Schriver will be giving a reading and signing her book Whispering in the Daylight: The Children of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries and Their Journey to Freedom at Malaprop’s Bookstore and Cafe in Asheville on Wednesday, August 22nd, at 6pm. The address is 55 Haywood St., Asheville, NC. Proceeds from book sales go to benefit cult survivors.

Schriver is a cult expert who was recently named to the Board of Directors for ICSA (International Cultic Studies Association). Debby will appear in the forthcoming SundanceTV/NBC Peacock Productions television docuseries entitled “Ministry of Evil: The Twisted Cult of Tony Alamo” as a cult expert throughout the docuseries.

The Asheville Connection:
Alamo died in 2017 in a Federal Prison Hospital in Butner, N.C., while serving a 175-year prison sentence for transporting children across state line for sexual purposes. The big connection with North Carolina is the midpoint between Asheville and Charlotte, where a cult similar to Alamo’s is currently operating in Spindale, N.C. The Word of Faith Fellowship has been operating under the leadership of Jane Whaley for more than 30 years. (See article here.) It fits the same general mold as all cults, exercising complete control over members who joined merely seeking answers, peace, and God, and the ensuing emotional, physical, and sexual abuse only tightens the snares it has on its members. Through public awareness and access to reliable, vetted resources, cults’ power can be eroded and victims and would-be victims helped. Debby is a cult expert who has recently been named to the board of the International Cultic Studies Association.

Of National Interest:
While Alamo died last year, his cult is still going strong. The FBI recently reported that the cult is currently active in California, Arkansas, and New York. Incredibly the cult is making strong inroads in New York City. Of additional pop culture interest: Alamo was the western wear magnate behind The Alamo of Nashville “Clothing to the Stars,” the brand which was sold by department stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as in the Nashville boutique. The clothing has been worn by Mr. T, Mike Tyson, Don King, Brooke Shields, Lou Gossett, Jr., Ann Jillian, Dolly Par]ton, Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire, Ted Nugent, Willie Nelson, Lee Greenwood, Juice Newton, Nicki Manaj, and many more. The bejeweled denim was produced by children in Alamo’s cult, kept closely and abusively under his thumb. It is still for sale on social media. Businesses have supported Alamo’s cult over time, like the Gap, Walmart, Ralph Lauren, and more. Food retailer Trader Joe’s still delivers to cult’s main Saugus Canyon (Los Angeles), California location to this day.
