Press release from Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy:
Join us for a celebration of the full moon and a breathtaking 360-degree view of the sunset from atop Bearwallow Mountain. On Monday, May 8, we will be hiking to the top of Bearwallow Mountain to view the full moon and invite you to come along.
The Bearwallow Mountain trail has been one of CMLC’s recreational center pieces since 2011, when with the help of the Carolina Mountain Club, REI Asheville, and dedicated community volunteers, CMLC constructed a sustainable trail leading up to the summit, which was originally protected through a conservation easement in 2009.
We will start our hike just before sunset and climb to the summit of Bearwallow Mountain reaching a final elevation of 4,232 feet above sea level. From the grassy bald top we will enjoy the final warm rays of sunlight and the spectacle of the sun setting amongst the surrounding mountains before greeting the moon as it takes the sun’s place in the sky. We will descend the mountain with the moonlight guiding our way.
This hike is 2.0 miles round trip and rated as moderate. The total elevation gain is 537 feet. Due to the nature of this hike head lamps and/or flashlights are required. As the temperature in the mountains drops quickly after sunset this time of year, we recommend packing additional layers of clothing and something to cuddle up in for the moon rise.
This hike is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required! To sign-up, visit bit.ly/adventuresignup. For more information, visit carolinamountain.org. “Like” us on Facebook to stay up-to-date on all of CMLC’supcoming adventures.
