Buncombe County Schools to honor class of 2020 with virtual graduation ceremony

Announcement from Buncombe County Schools:

The Buncombe County Schools (BCS) leadership team understands that due to the coronavirus pandemic, this semester has been a turbulent one for all of our students and their families, but especially our senior class! We are in the midst of an unprecedented health crisis and must operate under all federal, state, and local safety guidelines. School and district-level administrators have worked diligently to keep our seniors’ interests in mind as we have been forced to make difficult decisions.

Today, we do have some positive news to share. After gathering feedback from administrators, teachers, students, and parents, we have devised a plan to ensure that we maintain the dignity of graduation, honor all of our 2020 graduates for their 13 years of hard work as students, and prioritize the health and safety of our school community.

First, the Class of 2020 will be recognized with a virtual graduation ceremony hosted by key school staff members. This filmed production will premiere on the school’s website and social media pages on a day and time to be determined by your school.

After your virtual graduation ceremony, your school will schedule a diploma pick-up and a cap and gown photo opportunity at a staged area on your campus. This event will be limited to no more than two vehicles per graduate. Your principal will communicate further details including a specific day/time for this event.

Finally, a school-based reunion event for the class of 2020 will be planned and scheduled by the principal. The time will be determined during the 2020-21 school year in accordance with any COVID19 protocols that may be in place at that time.

COVID19 Phased Guidelines will be followed at the time of all the above-mentioned activities* taking place, and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be used by staff.

*The above activities are endorsed by the BCS Board of Education and sanctioned by the Buncombe County Emergency Operation Center.

In closing, to paraphrase Buncombe County Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Fletcher Tove, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Buncombe County has remained relatively low; however, he reminds us that COVID-19 is a highly contagious and potentially deadly illness. We must continue to work together, make good decisions, and follow all public health guidance as we navigate this difficult situation together.

Thank you!
