City of Asheville moves appointment schedule to four times per year for Boards & Commissions

Press release from City of Asheville:

On March 14, 2023 the Boards and Commissions Council Committee voted to support an operational change to move appointments from monthly to four – five times a year. Appointments currently run on a monthly basis to fill seats on more than 30 boards and commissions. The change will allow more time for outreach and consideration of applicants for appointments to City of Asheville Boards and Commissions.

Appointments will be made 4-5 times a year, as noted below:

The Planning & Zoning Commission and the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority appointments will remain in August.

Why is the appointment schedule changing?
• Provide Board Chairs and Staff Liaisons additional time to review applications before making recommendations
• Provide Council additional time to review applications for consideration of appointment
• Allow Clerk’s office to provide regularly scheduled training for new board members, chairs, and staff liaisons
• Allow Clerk’s office to engage in more outreach targeting underserved communities and populations
• Allow Clerk’s office to work with staff liaisons and board chairs to identify hard-to-fill seats and engage in special outreach to reach qualified potential applicants

If you have questions about this change, please email boards@ashevillenc.gov.
