Council on Aging updates services amid coronavirus concerns

Press release from the Council on Aging:

The Council on Aging (COA) for Henderson County, NC is providing the following update to its services as regards their Covid-19 Coronavirus preparedness.

The Meals-on-Wheels (MOW) program has implemented a no-contact protocol which is allowing them to continue their delivery of hot meals to their clients Monday thru Friday. All volunteers have been trained on the new guidelines and this new process is in place.

COA has closed the Sammy Williams Center congregate dining site and will reopen when guidance is clear that it is safe for larger numbers to gather again.

The COA Thrift Stores located in Hendersonville and Etowah will be closed for shopping until Tuesday, March 31. Please check their Facebook pages at facebook.com/HVLThrift/ or facebook.com/EtowahThrift/ for any updates or changes in reopening date and donation status.

Other than liquid nutrition pickup, the COA Office is not accepting walk-in clients. All clients of other programs that the Council serves should call 828-692-4203 or check updates at coahc.org.

Keith Logan, newly appointed Executive Director of COA stated, “These are difficult times. The older adult community we serve is vulnerable and fragile. We continue to balance the need to protect them from risk of contracting the virus with the risk of isolation and malnutrition. The protocols we have in place also contain back-up plans to provide a more limited, or even a total shutdown, of our MOW program if necessary. We are in contact with all governmental and public health offices to be sure that we are using the safest protocols available”.

Call for help: The Council is highly dependent on volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels to the most vulnerable members of our community. If you are willing and able to volunteer to help deliver Meals on Wheels, please call the Council on Aging at 828-692-6693.

Call for donations: These emergency measures require extra funds beyond those currently available for food delivery. If you would like to support the Council on Aging in its efforts to maintain food delivery service, go to coahc.org/donate. Please write “for COVID-19 response” in the honor/memory box. OR send a check to: Council on Aging for Henderson County, 105 King Creek Blvd., Hendersonville, NC 28792.
