Deltec Homes celebrates 50 years

Press release from Deltec Homes:

Deltec Homes, Asheville-based home builder best known for their signature round homes, celebrates 50 years in Western North Carolina.

Founded in 1968 as Delta Technologies by brothers Wayne and Robert Kinser, the panelized building company originally built A-frame houses but changed course once they realized its disadvantages.

“We built a few and realized how inefficient they were in terms of heating and use of space,” said the late founder Robert Kinser. “The round houses had much more possibilities.”

They were right. For over 20 years after that revelation, they built their round structures primarily for vacation resorts. As guests inquired more and more about the unique structures for everyday living, their business shifted from commercial to residential and in 1995, they officially became Deltec Homes.

As one of the earliest prefabricated builders in the United States, Deltec has not only survived, but has continued to innovate. Emphasis on environmentally responsible practices has been an unwavering priority, even in the face of economic pressure and cyclical recession. While over 170,000 small businesses closed in the U.S. between 2008 and 2010 due to the recession, Deltec not only resisted pressures to cut corners, but invested in forward-thinking green infrastructure. They installed a 273 solar panel array at their manufacturing facility, which was, at the time, the largest array in North Carolina. The solar assembly allows them to operate their facility with 100 percent renewable energy. Sticking to their core values, and maintaining a sense of environmental consciousness, they believe, has allowed them to survive and keep innovating, all these years later.

“We’re focused on not just making things ‘less bad than they used to be’,” says Steve Linton, president of Deltec Homes, “but to find a way to build homes that have a restorative effect on the planet.”

That commitment paid off in 2016 when they became the first prefabricated home builder receive B Corp Certification, a certification given to companies that meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.

In addition to environmental consciousness, material quality is a key differentiator that they are proud to hold as a core company value. In fact, 99.9 percent of their materials are made in America and they use framing lumber that is two times stronger than traditional lumber, ensuring that their homes are not only more durable, but require much less maintenance.

Specializing in high performance, hurricane resistant and net-zero homes, their product line has evolved beyond just round homes with their Renew Collection, a line of homes that offers more modern styles with the Ridgeline model and Solar Farmhouse.

Today, Deltec Homes has shipped over 5,000 homes to all 50 states and 30 countries, all from their manufacturing facility in West Asheville.

“We’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished in our first 50 years and look forward to continue that innovation into the next 50,” said Linton.
