There could be a crowd and extra congestion around Pack Square tomorrow at lunch time as people are expected to gather in support of the Obama administration’s new efforts to curb air pollution from power plants. The Sierra Club announced earlier that they would be inviting several speakers including: Emma Greenbaum, Luis Martinez and Dave Hollister. The rally will begin at noon.
Press advisory from Asheville Chapter of the Sierra Club:
Community members will gather at noon Tuesday in Pack Square for a celebration to highlight the significant and numerous benefits of the new Clean Power Plan (CPP), which will help keep North Carolina families healthy and safe by reducing dangerous carbon pollution from power plants for the first time ever.
Finalized by the Obama Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency today, these protections will help clean up the air, reduce pollution-related respiratory illnesses, and curb the worst effects of climate disruption.
Carbon pollution is linked to life-threatening air pollution, notably smog, which can trigger asthma attacks and lead to heart attacks and even premature deaths. These devastating effects also disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color, The CPP will help communities across the country, like Asheville, retire dirty coal plants, the largest contributors to dangerous carbon pollution, and transition to clean energy, thereby cutting the dangerous pollution that makes families sick. In addition to the health benefits, the CPP will save money, spur innovation and accelerate the clean energy economy.

Great to read that carbon pollution prevention is on the front page.
When asked about when Buncombe restaurants will be installing pollution controls on their chargrilling burger frying smokestacks the local air pollution control (???) agency says these businesses don’t count, too small of a point source, no permitting process for these little guys…etc….
They did concede that the hundreds of restaurant point source smoke stacks do add up to a lot of smoke and grease and particulate matter. Summary: DON’T live near restaurant row.
