Fans mourn death of Andy Griffith

Here’s an excerpt from the Ashevile Citizen-Times article:

Andy Griffith never made a movie here or shot an episode of his two iconic television shows in the mountains.

But for the millions who watched “The Andy Griffith Show” and later the courtroom drama “Matlock,” Griffith was as beloved and real as they get, a North Carolina native son who never strayed far from the values of the Tar Heel State.

Griffith, who played Mayberry sheriff Andy Taylor from 1960-68, then Georgia lawyer Ben Matlock from 1986-92, died Tuesday at his home in Dare County at age 86.

“He brought North Carolina to the world,” said Bill Gregg, producing artistic director at Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre. “What he did for North Carolina was pretty amazing.”
