Press release from Buncombe County Recreation Services:
The public is invited to attend the Grand Opening Celebration for the new Lake Julian Park playground located at 406 Overlook Extension, Arden, on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 10:00 am.
“Lake Julian Park is popular with kids and families, and these enhancements will support the community in being even more active and connected,” said Park Manager, David Blynt.
The original playground was installed over 24 years ago and has been slated for replacement for several years. The 2011 Lake Julian Master Plan included a new larger inclusive playground, but funding for that project was never allocated. The playground finally came to fruition after County Commissioners agreed to spend funding that had been set aside as “match” funding for potential grant opportunities that failed to pan out. The funding was combined with cost savings from other Lake Julian projects in order to bring the dream to reality.
“I think we were all frustrated by delays in getting the project off the ground and not being able to dial in on a grant that could fund the project; however, at the end of the day I’m really proud of the work that the staff did in continuing to reach for creative solutions to bring the play space to life,” said Josh O’Conner, Buncombe County Recreation Services Director.
Beginning just days before July 4, the construction team worked diligently during extreme heat and rain to complete the playground. In a record 10 days, bare ground, shaded by towering shade trees was transformed into a ship with large sails ready to embark on many adventures.
Recreation Services staff are over the top excited about the new inclusive playground which includes equipment for both young and older children, with swings, a climber, and the ability to slide and twirl. The playground’s modern, multicolored theme was chosen to symbolize the vibrant outdoors and lake surrounding the park.
The playground has been in operation since July 4 giving the department an opportunity to assess the equipment and layout prior to the official grand opening. The park and playground are open seven days a week. The playground will continue to remain operational and welcomes visitors to come sail the high seas or check out any of the other amenities the park offers.
