MoveOn, a national grassroots activism organization, is holding a candlelight vigil in Asheville in anticipation of Congress’ vote on the Iran Deal. Whitehouse.gov describes the international plan as “a long-term comprehensive nuclear deal with Iran that will verifiably prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and ensure that Iran’s nuclear program will be exclusively peaceful going forward.”
The local vigil, one of many staged by MoveOn across the nation, takes place Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m., downtown at the Federal Building (151 Patton Ave.).
Here is the full release from organizers:
Thursday, September 10, local constituents will hold a vigil in support of peace and diplomacy as Congress prepares to vote on the historic nuclear agreement with Iran this week. The local vigil, which falls on the National Day of Prayer, is one of many being organized nationwide by members of MoveOn.org and allies. The vigils build on the grassroots activism by MoveOn members and allies over the past six weeks, including a national day of action with more than 200 events nationwide outside representatives’ and senators’ offices.
Over the August congressional recess, thousands of pro-diplomacy activists turned out at hundreds of town hall meetings, rallies, demonstrations, and other events to make visible their support for the deal. Attendees will also be thanking Representatives who courageously support the deal, and calling on those who are undecided to vote for diplomacy over war.
