Haywood Streetscape Project update

Press release from

Street closures on on Haywood Street planned for this week are being extended through Saturday, 4/25. While good progress has been made on this work, the depth of excavation and rock encountered on will require additional days to complete the work. To note, this is some of the heaviest work of the project and the only anticipated full street closures.

Here is the updated closure schedule:

Walnut Street *24-hour closure of upper portion extended through Saturday, 4/25

  • This street closure near the intersection of Walnut and Haywood is in place for the installation of a new sewer main and service tie-ins, which will wrap up work on Walnut.
    • The closure will be in place 24-hours a day during these three days.
    • Local traffic, including loading and deliveries, can still access destinations within the area with the assistance of on-site flaggers.

Haywood Street *24-hour closure extended through Saturday, 4/25

  • The street closure of Haywood Street between Battery Park Avenue and Page Avenue/Flint Street will be extended through Saturday to allow for the installation of new sewer lines and service tie-ins on Haywood Street at the intersection of Walnut Street.
    • The closure will be in place 24-hours a day.
    • Local traffic, including loading and deliveries, can still access destinations on Haywood Street and Vanderbilt Avenue (including the Civic Center parking garage) with the assistance of on-site flaggers.
    • ART’s N3 and N4 bus lines will be detoured during this time period. Check or sign-up for service alerts here.
  • For approximately 4 hours Friday morning (April 24) the section of Haywood Street between College Street and Battery Park Avenue will also be closed to through traffic.

Battery Park Avenue *Closure tomorrow morning (April 24) and further work pending

  • Private construction is requiring the use of Haywood Street between College and Battery Park Avenue for approximately 4 hours Friday morning, April 24. This will eliminate access between Battery Park Avenue and Haywood Street.
  • Additional temporary street closures are required for the completion of storm drain improvements on Battery Park Avenue between Haywood Street and Wall Street. This work was scheduled to take place this week but is still pending due to additional equipment being needed. We will provide updates when that work is rescheduled.
    • Battery Park Avenue will remain accessible from Wall Street, Page Avenue and Otis Street.
    • Traffic will return to its regular flow when construction is not actively taking place.

Previous project updates are available on the City of Asheville’s project page.
