Helpmate to hold domestic violence awareness vigil on Oct. 4

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Helpmate and UNC Asheville are partnering together to hold a Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil on Wednesday, October 4 from 5:30-7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the general community.

Two survivors of domestic violence will share their story and The Alex Krug Combo will perform live music. A Buncombe County Commissioner will read the Proclamation to End Domestic Violence. The names of domestic violence homicide victims will also be read in order to memorialize those that have lost their lives in North Carolina over the last year.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 4 from 5:30-7:30p.m. (refreshments served at 5:30pm, program starts at
6pm)

WHERE: UNC Asheville / Sherrill Center, Mountain View Room (#417)

WHY: To commemorate October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to
honor victims and survivors of domestic violence.

About Helpmate:
Helpmate is a domestic violence agency working with our community to eliminate abuse and fear by providing safety, shelter, and support for people who have been victimized by domestic violence.  Funded by a combination of United Way contributions, government grants, community donations and fundraising efforts Helpmate serves approximately 2,500 people in Buncombe County each year.  Free services include a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, individual and group counseling, case management, child and family advocacy, court advocacy and community education.  Volunteer support is critical to helping the organization fulfill its mission.  To request services, call Helpmate’s 24-hour hotline at 828-254-0516.  To offer donations or to inquire about volunteer opportunities, call the business office at 828-254-2968.
