The Hendersonville Fire Department recognized two of its members as award recipients for 2020. Congratulations to Engineer David Corey and Captain Cameron Womack for their achievements as Firefighter of the Year and Officer of the Year, respectively.
“These awards are especially important because they are voted on by the men and women who make up our department,” said Hendersonville Fire Chief D. James Miller. “Being recognized by your peers holds a special significance. Both of these individuals make a difference in the community, but they also encourage their brothers and sisters that work alongside them.”
Typically, the awards are presented at the department’s Christmas dinner, but due to COVID-19 precautions, the plaques were presented by Fire Chief D. James Miller, Deputy Fire Chief Justin Ward, and Fire Marshal Michael Ostrander at Fire Station 1 on January 19, 2021.
Engineer David Corey was honored as Firefighter of the Year. Engineer Corey began serving with the Hendersonville Fire Department in 2019. He was selected for the award based on his willingness to serve and how he stepped into the EMT Coordinator role in addition to his regular job duties. He helped track medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) and worked to keep staff informed of new COVID-19 protocols throughout the pandemic. He is also described as a mentor with a positive attitude and a willingness to listen. One of his nomination forms explained: “He has a way of communicating with fellow firefighters that helps solve problems or mitigate situations before they spiral out of control.”
Captain Cameron Womack joined the Hendersonville Fire Department as a firefighter in 2015. In 2020 he became the department’s Training and Logistics Officer. Captain Womack was selected based on the leadership he provides and his willingness to mentor and train probationary firefighters. One nomination form outlined how he has a caring heart and a true passion for the fire service: “Cameron is a humble leader who takes the time to connect with his coworkers and create a strong team environment.”
Both Engineer Corey and Captain Womack’s names will be added to the plaque on display at Fire Station 2.
The City of Hendersonville congratulates these firefighters on their awards and the professional service they provide to the residents and visitors of Hendersonville.
