Press release from Henderson County Tourism:
The new holiday skating rink in downtown Hendersonville invites families to spend quality time together this season.
The rink, located at the Visitor Center on South Main Street, opens Tuesday, Dec. 20, and operates daily through Sunday, Jan. 1. A synthetic skating surface made of special polymers allows ice-skaters to enjoy the sport in any weather.
“Skating can be a great memory-maker,” says Mia Freeman, a downtown merchant who is overseeing the event. “If you have extended family in town for Christmas, you can bring everyone down to the rink. We have benches for those who want to sit and watch. We hope the skating rink will become a great Christmas tradition.”
The rink accommodates 40 people at a time, and each skating session is 30 minutes. The synthetic ice provides a suitable surface for beginners to learn to skate and allows them to have more control than some natural surfaces.
Holiday skating is part of Hendersonville’s Come Home for the Holidays events, which continue through the New Year.
“We’re excited to offer a unique activity that visitors won’t find in towns around us,” says Beth Carden, executive director of the Henderson County TDA. “We’ve gone from having just a few events the first week of December to having activities all month and through the New Year. Visitors can come to go skating and then stay a night or two, do some shopping downtown, visit Santa and take a carriage ride.”
The skating rink is a fundraiser for the Henderson County America in Bloom Committee, which received a grant from the Tourism Development Authority to assist with the project.
On Dec. 20, at noon, a professional skater and Christmas show mark the rink’s opening.
Skating admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 10 and younger. Group rates are available for 10 or more people. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day when the rink is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
