A guided walk along Fifth Avenue in Hendersonville’s West Side Historic District neighborhood will highlight some remaining fall colors and over 80 dogwoods planted six years ago lining the historic roadway. On Sunday, November 18, the walk will begin at 2 p.m. Space is limited for the 90-minute walk. Reservations must be made by Friday, November 16, by phoning Judy Frank at 828-713-6807. Details will be provided. The walk is open to the public at no charge. This neighborhood stroll continues a popular series of guided tree walks sponsored by Hendersonville Tree Board.
Mark Madsen, a member of the Tree Board and an ISA Certified Arborist, will lead the walk, describing the oaks, maples, apple trees, hemlocks and others that make up the urban forest along Fifth Avenue West. He will discuss how the historic street and homes are enhanced by native and unusual trees along the route and discuss proper care to maintain health of older trees.
“This street shows off the handsome effects of one of our earliest NeighborWoods projects,” Madsen said, “with a long swath of dogwoods planted by homeowners. The stroll gives us a chance to really appreciate one avenue that helped the City receive Tree City of the Year in North Carolina, awarded recently by the NC Urban Forest Council and the NC Forest Service.”
Hendersonville Tree Board is commissioned by the City of Hendersonville to provide advice on the selection and care of trees and shrubs in public places. The Tree Board also educates the public concerning the economic and aesthetic benefits of trees and shrubs for the community. The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Hendersonville as a Tree City USA for 25 years because of its high level of tree care. The city became a Bee City USA in 2015. In 2018 the City was named Tree City of the Year in North Carolina.
