Jewelry trunk show at Grand Bohemian Gallery, July 18

Local jewelry designer Claudia Herr will show her newest work in silver and gemstone during a trunk show at the Grand Bohemia Gallery on Saturday, July 18. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Press release from the gallery:

Saturday, July 18, the Grand Bohemian Gallery presents a jewelry trunk show featuring the newest designs by locally-based artisan Claudia Herr. Her newest silver and gemstone works will be available to view, as will be the works of other Grand Bohemian jewelry artists, such as Bittersweet Designs, Ettamarie Wasson and Melinda Lawton, as well as a very special “seasonal soldes table.”

Herr will be showcasing several bodies of work, including her newest Eastern repousse and reticulated sterling techniques.

Reticulation produces a ridged or ripply surface through controlled heating. The ridges of a reticulated surface are more pronounced than any other surface treatment, looking like a moonscape or a relief map. In indirect light, the ridges of reticulation cast shadows, like those thrown by mountains in the late afternoon sun. And just as mountain shadows change with the shifting sun, the shadows on a reticulated surface shift as the wearer moves.

This texturing method first appeared in the late 1800s in Czarist Russia, where court jewelers, including Faberge, created textured objects such as liquor flasks and cigarette cases.

When the Faberge studios closed during the Bolshevik revolution, the Finns brought the technique back to their homeland, and from there it spread throughout Scandinavia.

The Grand Bohemian introduced Herr’s spectacular wearable art to Asheville some four years ago. Herr has been living in Asheville for close to nine years, and is originally from Germany. She and her family lived in Japan for eight years.

The Jewelry Trunk Show will showcase one-of-a-kind pieces by Herr along with several other Grand Bohemian Gallery stand-outs, and also features a ‘soldes’ table in the vein of French boutiques, featuring select seasonal pieces with special pricing.

Hours of the show: Saturday, July 18, 11-6, the artist will be present 11-2 and 5-6 p.m.
