Learn to cut, assemble, and raise a timber-framed building

Press release from Wild Abundance:

Timber framing has been used for centuries to build beautiful, stout structures that stand the test of time and don’t require any screws or nails to hold them together. This versatile technique can be applied to houses, barns, and even the roof systems of elegant cathedrals. It’s a unique, solid, handsome, and time-honored style of building.

From September 9 – 15, 2021, Wild Abundance will be hosting a Timber Framing Class in partnership with Ivy Creek Timber Frames. In this class, students will work as a team to lay out, measure, cut, fit, assemble, and raise a 16’ by 20’ building. It is completely hands-on, and students will walk away with experience in every step of the process of turning squared-off logs into a strong frame. Whether you’re a DIY builder, hope to build your own home someday with sustainable materials, or you’re a contractor looking to expand your repertoire, timber framing is a fabulous skill to learn.

The lead instructor for this class is Brain Snedeker of Ivy Creek Timber Frames. Brian has been timber framing for over 15 years, from repairing and stabilizing historic barns and homes in New England to designing and building frames and practicing carpentry in Asheville for the past nine years. The Timber Framing Class will be hosted at Brian’s workshop in Barnardsville, NC and is being offered on a sliding-scale, meaning that you can choose what you pay given your means. Early-early bird pricing runs through July 8, 2021.
