Meet the Candidate: U.S. House District 11

Time: 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Location: Bentley Fellowship Hall

Phillip Price, the Democratic candidate for US House of Representatives District 11, will visit campus on Monday, August 27th at 5:30pm-8:00pm in the Bentley Fellowship Hall.

Crossroads Chapel Service

Time: 11:00 a.m.

Location: Broyhill Chapel

Speaker this week is Rev. Stephanie McLeskey, MHU chaplain.

Music Faculty Showcase Recital

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: Moore Auditorium

An evening of music with performances from Mars Hill University music faculty and staff members: Cathy Adkins, Brad Curtioff, Jennifer Pedersen, Jason Slaughter, Jim Sparrow, Teresa Sumpter, Alan Theisen, and Misty Theisen. Admission is free and open to all.

Organization Fair

Location: Upper Quad

On- and off-campus organizations will set up booths to inform students of opportunities to get involved with those organizations.

Thursday, August 30

Workshop on Story Medicine

Time: 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Location: Day Hall, Rm 202

This workshop, led by Ms. Meta Commerse, seeks to establish value and power to personal story and will introduce the use of story medicine as a means to build resiliency. This fishing trip into self has been used to heal oneself and bring greater understanding regarding life events. In a specific way, it can be used to process social injustice and our roles in social communities. Ms. Commerse uses story medicine in the context of healing from physical and mental trauma or abuse, racial tension, ageism, and adjusting to changes in life. Participants will gain a greater understanding of themselves as well as learn some pedagogy to use story medicine in a classroom setting.

Music & Food: The Double Essence of Appalachia

Time: 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Location: Ramsey Center for Regional Studies (Renfro Library)

Madison County native Susi Gott Séguret will lead this discussion on the intertwined relationship of food and music in Appalachia. From Cecil Sharp to Bascom Lamar Lunsford to the Sodom Ballad Singers, Madison County has long contributed to the international folklore surrounding both music and its culinary subjects. Séguret isan accomplished fiddler, dancer, and songwriter who lived for over 20 years in France and earned a diploma in Gastronomy and Taste from the Cordon Bleu and the Université de Reims. Part of the Appalachian Evenings lecture series.

Bailey Mountain Work Day

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Location: Bailey Mountain

Work day to get trails ready for Monday’s First Year Bailey Mountain hike. 

MHU Football on ESPN+

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: ESPN+ (game in Johnson City, TN)

Mars Hill’s season opening football game, at East Tennessee State University, will be broadcast by ESPN on its ESPN+ streaming service.

Hike of Bailey Mountain

Time: 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Location: Bailey Mountain trail (meet at Wren Student Union for carpooling to trailhead)

President Tony Floyd will lead students on a hike up Bailey Mountain, the iconic mountain overlooking the Mars Hill University campus.
