Mars Hill University offers free stand-up comedy workshop March 28

Mateen Stewart

Press release from Mars Hill University:

A Stand-up Comedy Workshop will be held Saturday, March 28, 2-5 p.m., in the James Thomas Black Box Theatre in the Day Hall on the campus of Mars Hill University, with an open mic opportunity from 7-9 p.m. at the Hickory Nut Gorge Brewery located in downtown Mars Hill. Registration for the workshop is now open; email boxoffice@mhu.edu to RSVP.

In the workshop, Mateen Stewart presents the proven methods for making people laugh and how to create personal comedic routines from everyday life experiences. Participants study other working comedians’ styles, discover how to harvest their own comedy material, and practice developing their own comic voice. The workshop includes a combination of writing and performing exercises designed to turn everyday observations into punch lines. Techniques covered include premise, set-up, development payoff, and more.

Mateen has been a part of the comedy scene for more than 20 years and is an international headliner, as seen on Jimmy Kimmel Live, HBO’s Last Week Tonight and Brain Games. Mateen peels back the layers of everyday life and finds the funny in everything! Originally from Detroit and now a highly regarded comedian in Los Angeles.
